Background of the Study
Digital storytelling on YouTube, characterized by video narratives and interactive comment sections, has reshaped communication practices in Nigeria. YouTube comments, which often accompany dynamic video content, reflect evolving syntactic patterns as users engage in storytelling, critique, and social commentary. Nigerian YouTube commenters adapt their syntax by employing non‑standard sentence structures, ellipses, and creative punctuation to convey emotion and humor. This study examines how digital storytelling influences Nigerian syntax by analyzing the linguistic features of YouTube comments. It explores how the visual and auditory context of videos informs textual responses and drives syntactic innovations. The research situates these changes within broader theories of digital discourse and narrative practices, revealing the interplay between multimedia content and language structure (Ibrahim, 2023; Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of YouTube as a digital storytelling medium, there is limited research on how its comment sections influence syntactic variation in Nigeria. Existing studies often ignore the interactive nature of video content and its effect on language structure. This gap restricts our understanding of how multimedia contexts foster syntactic innovation. The study aims to address this by analyzing YouTube comments in Nigerian digital discourse, thereby revealing the impact of visual storytelling on syntactic adaptations (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze syntactic features in Nigerian YouTube comments.
To assess the influence of digital storytelling on syntax.
To develop a model linking multimedia context with syntactic innovation.
Research Questions:
What syntactic variations are evident in YouTube comments?
How does video content influence textual language structure?
What mechanisms drive syntactic adaptation in digital storytelling?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to our understanding of multimedia effects on language by exploring the interplay between digital storytelling and syntactic innovation in Nigeria. Its findings inform linguists and media scholars about the transformative impact of visual media on textual discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian YouTube comments.
Definitions of Terms:
Digital Storytelling: Narratives conveyed through multimedia platforms.
Syntax: The structure of sentences in language.
YouTube Comments: User-generated textual responses to video content.
